From the WSJ dated Feb 1, 2017 …… After a 25% jump in November, the month that Mr. Trump was elected, December remittances grew 6.2% from a year before to $2.34 billion, bringing the total for the year to $27 billion, the Bank of Mexico said Wednesday. That marked an 8.8% increase from 2015, and was above the previous record of $26.1 billion sent home in 2007.
Remittances to Mexico, 95% of which come from the U.S., have overtaken oil as a source of foreign currency in recent years. Mexico’s petroleum exports totaled $18.7 billion in 2016, while revenue from foreign visitors was $17.4 billion through November.
